Our mission is to protect the life, safety and welfare of our citizens, visitors and businesses by contributing to the preservation of our historic resources and present and future economic viability of the City of Salem.
To do this, we work to fairly and efficiently enforce the Virginia Uniform Statewide Building Code by regulating the safety, design, use or occupancy of all buildings and structures within the City of Salem.
2012 and 2015 BUILDING Codes:
The State of Virginia adopted the 2015 building and related codes on September 4, 2018. For one year past that date, it is the option of the applicant(s) to use either the 2012 or the 2015 building codes. The City of Salem will enforce only the 2015 building and related codes after September 4, 2019. Any plans and supporting documentation submitted after that date must show compliance with the 2015 codes.
