Salem High School, the Western Virginia Basketball Officials Association and the City of Salem Parks and Recreation Department are all set to host the third annual Adam Ward Classic on February 2. The one-day roundball extravaganza will take place at Salem High School and once again honor the memory of the former Spartan and Virginia Tech graduate. Proceeds that are generated from the event will benefit Adam’s scholarship that is administered annually by the Salem Educational Foundation and Alumni Association.
Fourteen of the top boys and girls teams in the region will compete in the Salem gym, and fans can grab a tournament pass that is good for all seven games for just $10 the day of the event.

Three of the valley’s longtime basketball supporters, Jerry Spangler, Grant Smythers and Hank Luton, are once again in charge of the tournament. Smythers, who is a teacher and former coach at Salem High, has been instrumental in fundraising for the Ward Scholarship since it was established in 2015 following Adam’s passing.
"During our three years of existence, the Adam Ward Classic has grown into one of the premier basketball events in the state of Virginia,” says Smythers. “We have been able to donate thousands to Adam’s Scholarship Fund and the Ward Family has been overwhelmed by the sheer number of people who have taken time out of their busy schedules to remember Adam each year with their #AdamLike presence and support.”
