City Unveils New Downtown "Learning on The Lawn" Program

The City of Salem is pleased to announce a new joint venture between the city’s public library and farmers market that will take place in the heart of the Downtown District starting this Saturday. “Learning on The Lawn” will be held on the large green space in front of the Salem Public Library and feature everything from DIY workshops to home brewing.

“Learning on the Lawn is the newest addition to the wide variety of programming offered by the Salem Public Library and we’re delighted that these programs will appeal to all ages,” says Ann Tripp, Salem Library Director. “We’re also excited to be teaming-up with the Salem Farmers Market and, hopefully, both sides of Main Street will be busy on Saturday mornings.”

The programs will be held on select Saturdays each month in April, May, June and August. Each event will begin at 9 a.m. and feature multiple demonstrations throughout the morning. The first presentation will feature Nancy Maurelli with her informative and entertaining “Grow Your Plate” program. She will have tips on seasonal eating based on what is available at your local market and offer fun and beneficial ideas for turning your market purchases into affordable and easy meals.

“Nancy’s enthusiasm is unmatched and I know people will be very interested in her ‘kitchen gardening’ techniques this Saturday,” says Laura Reilly, Salem Horticulturist. “Nancy showcased her talents for us at the Chef’s Circle in 2011 and she was very well received.”

This new initiative will replace the Chef’s Circle on the Farmers Market program that began in 2009 and continued through 2015 with successful cooking demonstrations that featured local chefs and locally grown ingredients.

“The Chef’s Circle was arguably the most innovative farmers market program in the entire state,” says Mike Stevens, Salem Communications Director. “We had a loyal fan following and some incredible partners like Jeff Bland, but securing chefs to commit to the program became more difficult as the years went on. Our seven year run was tremendous, but now it’s time to evolve and give the mobile kitchen a new home and a new purpose.”

“Learning on the Lawn” attendees are encouraged to bring a lawn chair or a blanket for seating and the stage will be set up to maximize the shade from the trees on the library lawn. The Salem Public Library is located in the heart of Downtown Salem at 28 E. Main St. All programs are absolutely free.
