Fire Chief

Chief John Prillaman
service since 1998

Chief John Prillaman was hired by the Salem Fire & EMS Department in November of 1998. Prior to his employment with the Salem Fire & EMS Department, Chief Prillaman was enlisted with the United States Air Force (Fire Protection Division) and served as a volunteer firefighter with the Roanoke County Fire & Rescue Department, serving the last two years as the Fire Chief of Back Creek Station #11. He holds a Bachelor's Degree in Fire Administration from Hampton University and a Master’s Degree in Public Administration from Virginia Tech.

Chief Prillaman started his career as a firefighter and steadily moved up through the ranks, promoted to Senior Firefighter in 2001, Lieutenant in 2005, Captain in 2006 and Deputy Chief in 2010. Chief Prillaman was appointed Fire Chief/Emergency Management Coordinator on January 1, 2015. Chief Prillaman currently serves on the Virginia Fire Chief’s Association Board of Directors as a Vice President (Division 6) and has completed the Executive Fire Officer Program at the National Fire Academy in Emmitsburg, Maryland.
