Apartment Fire Forces Friday Evacuation

The Salem Fire & EMS Department responded to an apartment fire on Gatehouse Lane this afternoon at approximately 5:08 p.m.  All occupants were able to make it out of the building safely and there were no injuries, as a result of the fire.  Approximately 12 residents were evacuated from the building.

The first units arrived within five minutes of receiving the call and found fire and smoke coming from a third-floor apartment. The fire was brought under control within 10 minutes of the arrival of the first engine.  The apartment sustained significant damage, but crews were able to contain the fire to the room of origin and prevent any additional damage to adjacent apartments.

Approximately 23 personnel from the Salem Fire & EMS Department (Truck 1, Engine 2, Engine 3, Medic 802, Medic 803, Medic 804, Battalion 1 & Fire Medic 1) and the Roanoke Fire & EMS Department (Engine 13 & Battalion 2) responded to the call.

The fire occurred in a vacant unit and the residents living in adjacent apartments should be able to return to their residences later this evening.  The Salem Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating the fire, and there is no damage estimate at this time.
