Using the Public Computers

  1. The Salem Public Library has 12 public computers for free patron use.
  2. To use the computers, log in at an available PC with either your library card or a guest pass (available at the front desk).
  3. Sessions are one hour long and can be extended as long as there is no one on the reservation list waiting for a computer.
  4. If all PCs are in use, sign up at the PC Reservation station for the next available computer. A receipt will print for you with the computer number and reservation time when the computer will become available.
  5. In order to access the internet at the Salem Public Library you must agree to abide by our Internet Use Policy.
     

Mobile Printing

For a laptop or home computer:

1.    Begin by visiting: Salem's PrinterOn Site
2.    Select either the Black & White Printer ($.20/page) or Color Printer ($.50/page).
3.    Enter your email address (used to identify your specific print job).
4.    Browse your computer to find and select the file you wish to print.
5.    Click the grey Next arrow.
6.    Review and approve the number of pages and cost of your job, then click the Green print button. You will see the status of your print job.
7.    Visit the Salem Public Library’s self-printing station to release, pay for, and pick up your job. The self-printing station is located near the public computers, across from the circulation desk. The Salem Public Library’s address is 28 E Main Street, Salem VA 24153. For Apple  devices (iPad, iPhone):

1.    First download the PrinterOn App from the app store
2.    Open the PrinterOn app
3.    Tap the "No Printer Selected" button and select one of the icons from the bottom menu to find our printers. Select the map icon to search by location, or tap the magnifying glass icon and search “Salem Public Library” (you will want to select “Salem Public Library 28 E. Main Street”).
4.    Select 'Documents', 'Photos', or 'Web" to print.  Under 'Web" you will copy and paste or enter a url to print and then click print icon — you’ll be shown a preview of your document.
5.    To select only certain pages to print with a webpage, click the icon in the upper-right corner.
6.    Tap the print button
7.    Enter an email address and tap the check-mark in the upper-right corner–your printing status will appear.
8.    Visit the Salem Public Library’s self-printing station to release, pay for, and pick up your job. The self-printing station is located near the public computers, across from the circulation desk. The Salem Public Library’s address is 28 E Main Street, Salem VA 24153. For Android-powered devices:

1.    Download Android PrinterOn app from the Google Play store.
2.    Open the PrinterOn app
3.    Tap ‘select a printer’ at bottom and swipe left on top menu for Search option. Search “Salem Public Library” (you will want to select “Salem Public Library 28 E. Main Street”).
4.    Select 'Documents', 'Photos', or 'Web" to print.  Under 'Web" you will copy and paste or enter a url to print and then click print icon — you’ll be shown a preview of your document.

Wireless Access for laptops and other mobile devices

The City of Salem provides free wireless access inside the Salem Public Library and in downtown Salem. Please visit https://www.salemva.gov/Departments/Technology-Systems/Salem-Wifi to learn more about accessing the “Salem Wifi” network. You will need to be able to accept the City of Salem’s use agreement to join the wireless network.

Photocopier Services

The Salem Public Library offers a black & white copier for public use. Copies are $.20/page. 

Scanning Services

The Salem Public Library offers a tabletop scanner for free patron use. You can scan documents and email the file, save the file to USB, print to our library printers ($.20/page b/w, $.50/page color), or the software can generate a QR code for you to download using your smartphone or tablet’s camera and a free QR code reading app from your app store. Please note that if you send files as an email attachment, the email is generated through a private but no-reply email account; you will need to provide contact information to your addressee in order for them to reply to you.

Microfilm Reader

The Salem Public Library has a microfilm reader with which you can view, print, and save high-resolution imagery from the Roanoke Times and Salem Times Register microfilm in our collection. Also, you can request other microfilm reels through our Interlibrary Loan service. Click on About Us, Services, then on Interlibrary Loan for more information onobtaining items through ILL.
