Ms. Sellers is retiring on February 1, 2025 and Council honored her by proclaiming January 27, 2025, "Angela Sellers Day" in Salem.
PROCLAMATION
WHEREAS, we are here today to express our appreciation to Angela Sellers for her nearly 52 years of distinguished full-time service to the City of Salem and its residents; and
WHEREAS, in May of 1973, she began her career as a Payroll Clerk in the Finance Department. Back then, the city was just five years old and there were no computers, cell phones, or word processors. There were only adding machines, typewriters and the very first hint of IBM punch cards; and
WHEREAS, Angela Sellers remained a fixture in the Finance Department and advanced to Accountant, Accountant II, and eventually to the Assistant Finance Director position. She served in that latter role from 1979-2008 and always displayed a commitment to the City’s fiscal responsibility and integrity, providing oversight and ensuring the efficient allocation of public resources for the benefit of all residents; and
WHEREAS, in February 2008, Angela transitioned to Director of Technology Systems. During her tenure in this role, she not only migrated the department to a new building on West Main Street, but she played a major role in implementing systems that enhanced service delivery, modernized operations, and ensured that the City of Salem remained at the forefront of technological innovation; and
WHEREAS, in 2013, she moved back to City Hall under the City Manager to lead several key initiatives as Special Projects Coordinator, Special Projects Director, and as the city’s Process Improvement and Business Efficiency Director. During this stretch from 2013 to the present, she worked with her fellow employees to create achievable solutions, to streamline business operations, and foster a culture of efficiency and continuous improvement; and
WHEREAS, Angela Sellers has devoted 51-years and 8-and-half months of service to the city making her the longest tenured full-time employee in the City of Salem’s history; and
WHEREAS, Angela Sellers has always served with dedication and professionalism, even dating back to her part-time employment days at the Salem Civic Center’s Community Room from 1970-1973, and
WHEREAS, the City of Salem wishes to acknowledge the various contributions of Angela Sellers, whose work has improved the lives of citizens and established a legacy of excellence by contributing to the efficiency, innovation, and progress of our community.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, RENÉE FERRIS TURK, Mayor of the City of Salem, Commonwealth of Virginia, do hereby proclaim January 27, 2025, as
ANGELA SELLERS DAY
In the City of Salem, Virginia, and urge all residents and employees to join me and the City Council in congratulating Angela on an outstanding career with the City of Salem and wishing her many continued years of happiness and good health.
FURTHERMORE, let it be resolved that Angela Sellers shall forever be recognized as an integral part of the City of Salem, and we offer gratitude and best wishes for her well-earned retirement and all future endeavors.
