Tropical Storm Helene Updates in Salem

Home Posted on September 27, 2024

9 a.m. MONDAY 9/30 - HELENE AFTERMATH IN SALEM - WHAT YOU CAN DO TO HELP

While all roads are open and all power has been restored to customers in the City of Salem, there is still plenty of work to do.

Please help us this week by limiting your time on the GREENWAY. Crews needs full access to these areas to remove debris and clear dirt and sand that was pushed out the Roanoke River and onto the paths by the rising water. All of this must be removed to ensure walking, running, and biking can be done safely.

Also, please exercise patience when it comes to BRUSH COLLECTION The process of collecting the debris will not be accomplished in a few days. Make sure your downed limbs are no longer than six feet and that the brush is free of other debris like glass or metal. Thanks in advance.

5 p.m. SATURDAY 9/28

The Low Water Bridge at Mill Lane reopens after a full day of clearing debris that washed into the bridge from upstream.

12:45 p.m. SATURDAY 9/28

All streets in the City of Salem are now open with the exception of the Low Water Bridge at Mill Lane. City crews have been working non-stop to clear an incredible amount of debris that washed into the bridge from upstream and hampered the flow of the rushing water. The Roanoke River crested in Salem on Friday night at 9:30 p.m. We are thankful for the crews that continue to work on getting the bridge reopened. Also, a special pat on the back to the Salem Electric Department for having all power in the city restored before 5 p.m. on Friday.

It will take several weeks for all the debris and downed limbs to be cleared and collected, so please be patient.

In addition, the Salem Swiftwater team is back home after being deployed to Southwest Virginia. Our team helped make water rescues in Fries, Wytheville and Carroll County.
