Obtain a Library Card

Library cards are available for free to anyone who lives in Virginia. Cards may be issued to those who live out of state for a fee of $15. There is no minimum age for receiving a library card. Cards must be kept in good standing, with fines remaining under $10, in order for patrons to be able to check out materials.

Library card applications in both English and Spanish are available at all Roanoke Valley Libraries and must be completed and submitted in person. Proper picture identification must be presented at the time of application submission.

Acceptable forms of ID include:

  • Driver's License
  • Federal/State/Military I.D. Card
  • Passport
  • School Identification Card

All children under the age of sixteen (16) must have a parent or guardian signature to receive a library card.

Proof of current address is required if the picture ID does not have a current address. Any of the following are acceptable:

  • Utility Bill
  • Credit Card or Other Bill
  • Bank Statement
  • Updated Driver's License or State ID with Current Address
  • Any Other Official Mail or Document
  • School Identification Card

Patrons who already have an account that is not in good standing are not eligible to open new accounts. Fines must be paid in order for patrons to use their accounts.

Patrons are encouraged to have their cards in hand in order to check out. If you do not have your card with you when you come to check out, library staff will ask for a photo ID to verify your identity. This is for the protection of our patrons' accounts. If you do not have a photo ID with you, we may ask a variety of questions to ascertain proof of identity.
