Business Closure

Businesses operating within the City of Salem are required to formally notify the Commissioner of the Revenue upon permanent closure. Timely notification prevents the issuance of future business tax billings and ensures your tax records are accurate. Per Code of Virginia Business Tangible property taxes are based on where equipment is located on January 1 of each year and cannot be prorated, but business license taxes may be eligible for a prorated refund.  To report the closure of your business, please click the link below . Depending on your accounts status you may be required to provide the following documentation:

  • P & L Statement or Federal Tax Return supporting prior years gross receipts
  • Documentation showing business closure date. This documentation may include but is not limited to lease termination agreements, final federal tax return, utility turn off notification, business bank account closure letter, etc.
  • Business License from new locality (if your business has moved)
