Welcome to the James I. Moyer Sports Complex, one of Salem's premier recreational facilities. The complex opened in April of 1992 and hosts many different athletic events and tournaments. Events are typically held an average of 230 days a year, with an annual attendance of approximately 250,000 guests.
The complex is named for James Irvine Moyer, who was a passionate Salemite. After graduating from Salem High School in 1923, he began an active civic life in Salem, serving as a justice of the municipal court and as a judge of the Roanoke County Court and the Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court. Moyer is perhaps best remembered for his 16 years as Mayor of the Town of Salem (1948 to 1964). This period of growth saw the annexation of South Salem and the area around Electric Road (Route 419) into the town, as well as efforts to improve the water quality of the Roanoke River. Speaking at the conclusion of his term as mayor Moyer stated "I think of a Salem that has met the challenges of the years; that has put the interests of its citizens first; that has made of itself a good place in which to live and to work in harmony and quiet". This sentiment echoed his belief that so long as a "charitable spirit abides with us there will always be a Salem".
Sports were a strong passion of Moyer. He helped bring little league programs to Salem and was instrumental in the arrival of the Pittsburgh Pirates to Salem Municipal Field. His tenure as Chairman of the Civic Center Commission saw the construction of the Salem-Roanoke County Civic Center, now the Salem Civic Center, in October of 1967. Moyer was very involved with the Salem Lions Club, where he served as president. He was inducted as a charter member of the Salem Alumni Hall of Fame in 1996 for his longtime support of athletics in Salem.
