1. Do I have to pay sewer charges on seasonal lawn watering needs?: If the residence has an irrigation system, the sewer will only be charged on water entering the house. For more information, please visit the Irrigation Billing Information. If the residence does not have an irrigation system sewer charges will apply to all water usage.

2. Does the city provide a sewer credit for residents filling swimming pools?: No. Per Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recommendation, wastewater should be collected by the sewer and treated by a facility before being discharged to water bodies or land. Because sewage is not metered, the cost to treat the pool/wastewater when drained is assessed at the time of filling the pool. Please visit EPA website for more information.

For emergency water shut-off, please contact the Water Department by calling 540-375-3029.
If you have repaired a leak, please contact Utility Billing at 540-375-3026, Opt Number 2 for further assistance regarding a possible water leak credit adjustment.

6. Where can I find the current rates for water and electric services?: Please visit the City of Salem Electric and/or Water and Sewer department webpages for rate information.

7. Why are my bills so high?: There are many variables that impact the cost of electricity and water usage. Typically, we expect to see increased electric costs in the summer and winter months when heating and cooling needs are greatest. Water usage is normally very consistent from month to month when the number of occupants in the household remains the same. If the water has increased suddenly, please see "What to do if I suspect or have a known water leak".
